Faustina Atipoka Awane founded Bongo Development Organisation (BONDO) in 2008 after she had come to the attention of Water charities passing through the area.
Faustina was born in Bongo, Upper East Ghana into the family of a subsistence farmer, Mr Awane. Carrying water was her life, and many hardships were faced. After the loss of her mother, and of her sister in childbirth, Faustina found herself with her own son and her sister's 3 sons to take care of.
They all had to walk to collect water from miles away, to hand pump water into plastic drums and a wide basin. Adults help to lift the containers on to children's heads. 10kg on the heads of the children, 17kg on her own.
She would return after they were at school, doing 20 miles a day. Midnight would have her decanting the water into plastic bags. At 5 a.m. she would be in the market selling cool water for a few pennies to feed her family.
Faustina now has an MSc in Environmental Health from University of West England
